Do I Need to Register the DJI Neo?
At 135 grams the DJI Neo is one of the lightest camera drones on the market and sits well clear of the FAA's 250-gram registration threshold for recreational flyers.
Quick answer: do I need to register the DJI Neo?
Recreational flying: No — registration not required
At 135 g the Neo is less than half the 250 g threshold, so recreational flyers never need to register it — even with accessories fitted.
Part 107 (any business use): Yes — registration required
Part 107 requires registration of every aircraft, and the Neo has no built-in Standard Remote ID, so a broadcast module is also needed.
The DJI Neo is a palm-launched selfie drone built around simplicity. It weighs 135 grams with the battery and propeller guards installed, which places it in the lightest category of camera drones sold in the United States. For recreational flyers that weight answers the registration question immediately: no.
What surprises people is the second half of the answer. Weight determines registration for recreational flyers, but it does nothing for Part 107. If you use the Neo to shoot content for a business, a client or a monetized channel, the aircraft has to be registered even though it weighs barely a quarter of the threshold.
The Neo also does not have Standard Remote ID built in, which matters only in some situations. This page explains exactly when.

- The 135 g figure includes the battery, propellers and the integrated propeller guards that the Neo ships with. There is no lightweight configuration to worry about.
- Even with spare guards, a heavier microSD card and a strobe fitted, the Neo cannot realistically reach 250 g. The registration threshold is not a practical concern here.

Flying for fun means the recreational exception applies. Flying to promote or support any business puts you under Part 107, no matter how small the drone is.

What if you add accessories?
Accessories will not change the answer for the Neo
The 250-gram threshold matters enormously for 249-gram drones like the Mini 4 Pro and the DJI Flip. For the Neo it is academic. Even loaded with spare guards, filters and a strobe, the aircraft stays under 200 grams, which leaves a margin of more than 50 grams to the threshold.
That said, accessories can still affect your flight in other ways. Anything that adds drag shortens the already brief flight time, and a strobe changes the visual profile of a very small aircraft. Fit only what you need.

Where you can and cannot fly it
- Under 400 feet AGL and within visual line of sight at all times — the Neo's small size makes this the practical limit long before the legal one.
- Controlled airspace requires LAANC authorization. Being a tiny drone does not create an exemption.
- National parks, stadium TFRs and the Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area are closed to the Neo like any other drone.

Do I need to register the DJI Neo with the FAA?
Not for recreational flying. The DJI Neo weighs 135 grams, well under the FAA's 250-gram threshold. Registration is required only if you fly it under Part 107 for business purposes.
Does the DJI Neo have Remote ID?
The Neo does not have Standard Remote ID built in. Recreational flyers do not need Remote ID on an unregistered drone under 250 grams. Under Part 107 the Neo needs an external Remote ID broadcast module.
Can I fly the DJI Neo for a business without registering?
No. Any flight that furthers a business falls under Part 107, which requires aircraft registration at any weight plus a Remote Pilot Certificate.
Does the DJI Neo need the TRUST test?
Yes. All recreational flyers must pass TRUST, and there is no weight exemption. The test is free and takes about 20 minutes.
Can children fly the DJI Neo?
There is no minimum age to fly recreationally, but the person responsible for the flight must have passed TRUST. In practice a parent takes TRUST and supervises the flight.
