Knowing where you can fly is just as important as registering your drone. The FAA governs the airspace, but the land below is governed by a mix of federal, state, and local rules. A location can look legal on a LAANC map and still be illegal on the ground because of a park ban, a city ordinance, or private property restrictions. This guide separates the airspace rules from the land rules and explains the tools you need to stay compliant.
1. The basics
Recreational flyers in the United States may fly up to 400 feet above ground level in uncontrolled airspace, also known as Class G. That is the default ceiling for most low-altitude drone flying. In controlled airspace — the airspace around airports, charted as Class B, C, D, and surface Class E — you need FAA authorization before you take off.
The rule applies to all small drones, whether you are flying for fun or under Part 107. It does not matter that the drone is light, quiet, or only flying for a few minutes. If you are in controlled airspace without authorization, you are violating federal regulations.
When you fly over a structure, there is a narrow exception that lets you climb up to 400 feet above the top of the structure within a 400-foot radius. Outside that radius, you must descend back to 400 feet AGL. Most recreational flights do not need this exception, but it matters for roof inspections, tower work, and similar commercial jobs.
2. Airspace classes for beginners
Airspace classes are layers of controlled or uncontrolled airspace that surround airports and cover the country. You do not need to be a pilot to understand the basics for drone flying. The table below shows what each class means in practice.

In practice, most recreational pilots do most of their flying in Class G. The problem is that Class G can exist right next to controlled airspace. A field may be legal one day and require authorization the next if you walk a few hundred yards toward an airport. That is why app-based checks are essential.
3. LAANC
LAANC stands for Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability. It is the FAA's system for granting near-real-time approval to fly in controlled airspace below 400 feet. For recreational flyers, LAANC is available after you have passed the TRUST test. For Part 107 pilots, it is available as part of normal operations.
The key fact is that LAANC is free. You do not pay the FAA to use it. You request authorization through an FAA-approved USS — UAS Service Supplier — app. These are third-party companies that connect to the FAA system. The most commonly used apps include:
- Aloft — handles the large majority of LAANC requests and has a friendly interface for both recreational and commercial pilots
- Airspace Link — used by many cities and commercial operators for planning
- Wing OpenSky — Google's UAS service supplier, strong in some metro areas
- DJI Fly — includes a built-in GEO system and LAANC request flow for some DJI aircraft
- UASidekick — a popular choice for recreational pilots and some Part 107 workflows
Most requests are approved in seconds. If the grid is green, the app auto-approves up to the altitude shown. If the grid is yellow or red, or if you need a higher altitude, the request may go to manual coordination. In LAANC, further coordination requests for areas that the system cannot auto-approve are generally Part 107 only. Recreational flyers are usually limited to the green grids.

4. Where you can never fly
Some places are closed to drones regardless of airspace class. You do not need an app to know these are off limits. The federal bans are clear, and local enforcement is active.
National Park Service land
All National Park Service units — more than 420 parks, monuments, seashores, and historic sites — prohibit launching or landing drones. The ban also covers most National Park Service waters managed from the park. Civil penalties can reach $5,000 per violation. Some parks allow flights that stay outside the park boundary and never enter the park from below, but the practical rule is to stay well clear.
Stadium TFRs
Stadiums seating 30,000 or more during major sporting events get a temporary flight restriction. The TFR covers a 3-nautical-mile radius around the stadium and extends from the surface up to 3,000 feet. It is active from one hour before to one hour after the event. It applies to MLB, NFL, NCAA Division I football, and NASCAR races, as well as some major concerts and other large events.
Stadium TFRs are not optional or waiverable by LAANC. They show up in apps, but they appear and disappear quickly. If you are flying near a large stadium, check the schedule and the app before you launch.
Washington DC SFRA
The Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area is a 30-mile radius around Reagan National Airport. The inner 15-mile ring is effectively closed to drones. The outer ring has very limited access for properly authorized flights. If you are in the DC metro area, treat the entire SFRA as hostile to drone operations unless you have explicit, case-by-case FAA approval.
Military bases, prisons, and nuclear facilities
Military installations, prisons, and nuclear facilities are restricted by federal law. Do not fly over them. Do not rely on the fact that the airspace is technically Class G in some places — these sites have their own restrictions and security response.
5. Temporary flight restrictions
TFRs are temporary airspace closures that can appear with little notice. They cover wildfires, VIP movements such as presidential travel, major sporting events, and other security situations. A TFR can override even Class G airspace and make an otherwise legal flight illegal for hours or days.
The key habit is to check on the day of your flight. An area that was clear yesterday may not be clear today. Flying into a TFR is one of the fastest ways to get a call from the FAA or local law enforcement.

6. Apps you should have
You do not need every app on the market, but you should have at least one reliable airspace app and one LAANC app. Here are the most trusted options as of 2026.

- Aloft — the most popular LAANC app. It handles the majority of LAANC requests and also includes weather, flight planning, and airspace awareness.

- UAV Forecast — focuses on weather, wind, Kp-index, and satellite conditions. It helps you decide whether it is safe to fly, not just whether it is legal.
Keep your phone charged. Do not rely on a single source of information. When two apps disagree, the more conservative reading wins.
7. A critical warning
A green square in a LAANC grid means the FAA will authorize the airspace. It does not mean the land below permits takeoff. This is the most common mistake new pilots make. They see a green grid and assume the flight is legal, without realizing that the park, city, or property below has its own rules.
Airspace is not the same as land permission
Federal law generally preempts state and local regulation of airspace, but it does not preempt land use, privacy, trespass, or critical-infrastructure laws. That means a city cannot ban flying over the city, but it can ban takeoff and landing from city parks. A state cannot set its own altitude limit, but it can prohibit flying over prisons, wildfires, or crowds. Always clear both layers.

Federal rules govern the airspace above the United States. States and local governments govern what happens on the ground and in state-specific domains such as privacy, trespass, and critical infrastructure. Some states have specific drone laws that add extra restrictions beyond the FAA rules.
Common state-level restrictions include prohibitions on flying over prisons, wildfires, emergency scenes, and certain government buildings. Some states also require consent to fly over private property for surveillance purposes or prohibit harassment with a drone. Local parks departments often ban takeoff and landing from city or county parks.
