Remote ID is one of the biggest changes in U.S. drone law in the last decade. If you own a drone that must be registered, that drone also has to broadcast identification and location data while it is flying. The rule is already in effect, and enforcement has been made easier by new laws requiring the FAA to share Remote ID data with law enforcement in real time.
This guide explains what Remote ID is, what information it broadcasts, and how to comply. We cover the three legal paths — built-in, broadcast module, and FRIA — and the practical details that matter when you buy a drone, add a module, or fly inside a club site.
1. What Remote ID is
Remote ID is the drone equivalent of a digital license plate. Regulated under 14 CFR Part 89, it requires most drones to broadcast identification and location information that can be received by anyone with a compatible device. The goal is to make it possible to identify a drone in flight, locate the aircraft, and understand its movement in real time.
The rule applies to drones that must be registered with the FAA. In practice, that means most recreational drones over 250 grams and every Part 107 drone, regardless of weight. The FAA does not regulate the price of Remote ID hardware, but manufacturers have generally made it a built-in feature on newer models rather than a paid add-on.
2. What gets broadcast
Under 14 CFR 89.315, a Remote ID broadcast must include the following data while the drone is in the air:
- A unique identifier for the drone or module
- The drone's position and altitude
- The drone's velocity
- The position and elevation of the takeoff or control station
- A time mark
- An emergency status indicator
This is broadcast directly over radio, typically using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth protocols. It does not rely on a cellular connection, internet access, or a subscription service. Anyone nearby with a receiver that can decode the signal can read the broadcast.
3. Who needs it
Remote ID is required for every drone that must be registered. That means:
- Recreational drones over 250 grams must comply with Remote ID.
- Recreational drones under 250 grams are exempt from registration and therefore exempt from Remote ID.
- Part 107 drones must be registered regardless of weight, so they always need Remote ID.
Aircraft heavier than 55 pounds or operating under a different FAA authorization may fall outside the standard Remote ID framework. The rules below are written for the typical small drone owner, not for specialized operations.
4. Three routes to compliance
The FAA gives drone owners three ways to satisfy Remote ID. You only need one of them for a given flight.
Standard Remote ID
The drone comes from the manufacturer with a built-in Remote ID broadcast capability. The aircraft broadcasts its own identifier, location, and related data from the moment it takes off. Most drones released since mid-2022 fall into this category. You do not need to buy a separate module or take any extra action beyond registering the aircraft.
Broadcast module
A broadcast module is a separate device added to a drone that does not have Standard Remote ID. The module has its own serial number and broadcasts that identifier instead of the aircraft's built-in serial number. When you fly with a module, you must keep the drone within visual line of sight at all times.
Modules come in two broad types. Standalone modules have their own GPS and battery and can be moved between aircraft. Non-standalone modules draw power from the drone and are lighter and cheaper, but they are tied to the aircraft they are installed on.
FRIA
A FAA-Recognized Identification Area, or FRIA, is a fixed geographic area approved by the FAA where drones may fly without Remote ID. You can only fly without Remote ID inside the FRIA's boundaries, and you must still keep the drone within visual line of sight. FRIAs are often associated with model-aircraft clubs, educational institutions, or similar organizations.

5. Which drones have it built in
Most major drone manufacturers added Standard Remote ID to their consumer and prosumer models starting around mid-2022. The list below includes common models that are known to have built-in Remote ID, but always verify with the manufacturer or the drone's app before you rely on it:

6. Broadcast modules
If your drone does not have Standard Remote ID, a broadcast module is the most practical path. Standalone modules with their own GPS and battery typically cost between $130 and $300. Examples include the BlueMark db201, AeroPing, and Dronetag Beacon. Non-standalone modules that draw power from the aircraft can start around $40.
A module is not just a sticker or a label. It is an active radio transmitter that must be powered for the entire flight. That means you need to think about weight, power consumption, mounting, and whether it can survive hard landings or wet conditions. You also need to register the module's serial number with the FAA when you register the aircraft.

7. FRIAs
A FRIA is a geographic area approved by the FAA where Remote ID is not required. The Academy of Model Aeronautics has obtained FRIA status for more than 1,800 of its chartered club flying sites. Educational institutions can also hold FRIAs. Applications are submitted through the FAA DroneZone portal.
FRIAs are not a general exemption. They are tied to a specific location, and you must fly inside the approved boundaries. You also must keep the drone within visual line of sight. If you fly outside the FRIA, normal Remote ID rules apply again. For many hobbyists, this is a workable solution for older aircraft that lack built-in Remote ID, but it is not a substitute for compliance outside the club site.
8. Enforcement
Remote ID rules are in force. The FAA has cited different compliance milestones over the years, with some sources referencing September 16, 2023 and others referencing March 16, 2024. The exact historical date matters less than the current position, which is that the rule is active now. If you are planning a flight, verify the current status on the FAA's own website.
What has changed more recently is enforcement. The 2026 NDAA includes a requirement for the FAA to make Remote ID data available to law enforcement in real time. That makes it far easier for authorities to identify and locate a drone that is broadcasting non-compliant or missing data. Flying without Remote ID outside a valid exemption is a violation that carries the same penalty structure as other registration and operational violations.
