Stadium airspace is one of the few places where a drone flight can turn from a paperwork problem into a security investigation. The restriction is not new and it is not discretionary: it comes from a standing FAA notice implementing a statutory prohibition, and it is treated as a national-security matter rather than a routine airspace question.
What the restriction says
For any covered event, all aircraft — including drones — are prohibited from operating within a 3-nautical-mile radius of the stadium, from the surface up to and including 3,000 feet above ground level, beginning one hour before the scheduled event start and ending one hour after the event ends.
Three nautical miles is roughly 3.45 statute miles, or about 5.6 kilometers. That is a large circle: in a dense city it can cover several neighborhoods, downtown waterfronts and popular photo spots that have nothing to do with the game.
Which events trigger it
The standing restriction applies to:
- Major League Baseball regular and post-season games
- National Football League games
- NCAA Division I football games
- NASCAR Cup Series races
In each case the venue must have a seating capacity of 30,000 or more. That capacity threshold is what excludes most minor league parks, college basketball arenas and high school fields from the standing rule.

Why enforcement here is different
Stadium incursions get attention that a suburban altitude bust never would. Large venues are monitored during events, security staff report sightings immediately, and the flights are witnessed by tens of thousands of people with phones. Games have been paused because of a drone overhead, and pilots have been arrested at the stadium gate.

Penalties can include FAA civil action and, where interference with the event or aviation safety is alleged, federal criminal charges. Drone insurance will not help you here, and "I did not know" has never worked as a defense.
Parades, festivals and other gatherings
Any large open-air gathering is worth checking. Marathons, state fairs, air shows, concerts and championship parades regularly draw purpose-issued TFRs, and air shows in particular are closed for obvious reasons. Practical advice
If you live near a stadium, learn the shape of the circle once. Measure 3.45 statute miles from the venue on a map and note which of your usual spots fall inside. Then check the season schedule — on a fall Saturday near a Division I campus, that circle is closed for most of the day.
