Airspace in the United States is divided into classes, and the class you are standing under decides whether you can launch straight away or need permission first. The good news is that the overwhelming majority of the country — everything away from airports — is Class G, where a registered recreational flyer can simply take off and stay below 400 feet. The rest of this page is about recognizing the exceptions before you find yourself in one.
Controlled versus uncontrolled airspace
Every class other than G is controlled airspace, meaning an air traffic control facility is responsible for the aircraft inside it. Controlled airspace around airports is shaped like an upside-down wedding cake: a small cylinder tight around the runway that starts at the ground, with wider shelves stacked above it that begin at a few thousand feet. That shape matters for drones because you can be legally underneath a controlled shelf while standing in Class G airspace — and one block away be inside a surface area where authorization is mandatory.
This is why "am I near an airport?" is the wrong question and "what does my app say about this exact spot?" is the right one.
Class B — the busiest airports
Class B surrounds the nation's highest-volume airports: Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, JFK, Denver and around thirty others. Surface areas can extend several miles from the field, and the outer shelves reach up to roughly 10,000 feet.
On aeronautical charts Class B is drawn with solid blue lines. Drone flight inside the surface area requires an authorization, and grids close to the runways are frequently capped at 0 feet. Expect the tightest restrictions of any class here.
Class C — regional and mid-size airports
Class C wraps medium-traffic airports with radar service — think Austin, Nashville, Cleveland or Sacramento. The classic footprint is a five-nautical-mile inner core from the surface, plus an outer shelf from 1,200 feet up to about 4,000 feet above the field.
Charts show Class C with solid magenta lines. LAANC coverage is good at nearly every Class C field, so an authorization for 100 to 400 feet is often approved in seconds — just not directly under the approach paths.
Class D — towered but quieter
Class D is a small cylinder, typically four nautical miles across, around an airport with a control tower but no radar approach control. It usually reaches up to 2,500 feet above the field. Many Class D towers are only staffed part of the day; when the tower closes the airspace often reverts to Class E or G, but your LAANC authorization requirement does not disappear just because the tower is dark.
Charts draw Class D with a dashed blue line. These are the fields where drone pilots most often get instant approvals at 200 to 400 feet.
Class D and part-time towers
Class E — controlled, usually above you
Class E is all the controlled airspace that is not A, B, C or D. Most of it starts at 700 or 1,200 feet above the ground, far above the drone ceiling, which is why the vast majority of Class E is irrelevant to a drone flight.
The exception is a Class E surface area: a piece of Class E that begins at the ground, drawn on charts with a dashed magenta line. These exist at airports with instrument approaches but no tower. Inside one, you need an authorization exactly as you would in Class D. Class E areas beginning at 700 feet are outlined by a shaded magenta band and do not restrict a flight below 400 feet.
Class G — where most drone flying happens
Class G is uncontrolled airspace: backyards, parks, farmland, most beaches, and everything away from the airport footprints described above. Recreational flyers may operate up to 400 feet above the ground here with no call, app or authorization — while still keeping the drone within visual line of sight, yielding to manned aircraft, and respecting whatever rules apply to the land below.

Reading a UAS facility map
FAA-approved apps overlay the airspace with a grid of squares, each labeled with a ceiling in feet: 400, 300, 200, 100 or 0. That number is the highest altitude the FAA will approve automatically in that square. Green squares with a number are routine approvals; a square marked 0 means no automatic approval at all.

Airspace approval is not land permission
Special use airspace and restricted areas
On top of the lettered classes you will encounter prohibited areas, restricted areas, military operations areas and temporary flight restrictions. Prohibited areas — the airspace over the White House being the best-known — are closed outright. Temporary restrictions pop up for sporting events, presidential travel, wildfires and disaster response, and they are legally binding the moment they take effect.
