Traveling with a drone is mostly a battery problem. The aircraft itself is just fragile electronics that fits in a backpack; the lithium packs are regulated dangerous goods, and the rules are the same on essentially every airline because they come from international air transport standards rather than individual carriers.
Get three things right and travel is uneventful: batteries in your carry-on, watt-hours within limits and protected against short circuit, and the destination's drone laws checked before you book.
Batteries go in carry-on, always
Spare lithium batteries are forbidden in checked baggage. The reasoning is simple: a thermal runaway in the cabin can be seen and dealt with by the crew, while the same event in the cargo hold cannot. This is not an airline preference you can negotiate — it applies to every carrier, on domestic and international flights alike.
In practice, pack the drone, the controller, all batteries, the charger and your memory cards in the bag that stays with you. If your carry-on gets gate-checked because the cabin is full, take the batteries out and keep them on your person; airline staff are used to this request.
A battery installed in the aircraft is treated more leniently than a spare in some jurisdictions, but there is no reason to rely on that. Keep everything in the cabin and the question never comes up.
Never check a drone battery
The 100 and 160 watt-hour thresholds
The limits are set per battery, by energy rather than physical size:
- Up to 100 Wh — permitted in carry-on with no approval. Airlines may set a reasonable quantity limit, generally around 15 to 20 devices or packs for personal use. Almost every consumer drone battery falls here.
- 101 to 160 Wh — permitted only with the airline's approval, and you may carry a maximum of two spare batteries. Request approval when you book or at check-in; some carriers want it in writing.
- Over 160 Wh — prohibited on passenger aircraft entirely. Packs this large must ship as cargo under dangerous goods rules, which is not practical for a holiday.
For context: a typical folding consumer drone pack is 40 to 80 Wh, a large prosumer aircraft pack sits around 90 to 100 Wh, and heavy cinema batteries can exceed 160 Wh. Chargers, hubs and controllers with internal batteries count too, though they are almost always well under 100 Wh.
How to calculate and find your watt-hours
The formula is Wh = V x Ah. Capacity is usually printed in milliamp-hours, so divide by 1,000 first:
- 15.4 V x 5.0 Ah (5000 mAh) = 77 Wh
- 11.55 V x 2.25 Ah (2250 mAh) = 26 Wh
- 17.6 V x 5.88 Ah (5880 mAh) = 103.5 Wh — approval territory
Use the nominal voltage printed on the label, not the maximum charge voltage, and check the capacity in mAh on the same label. Most drone manufacturers now print the watt-hour figure directly, which is what security staff will look for — if yours does not, note the calculation on a printed spec sheet or keep the manual page on your phone.
Keep original labels legible. A pack with the label worn off is a pack whose energy nobody can verify, and that invites a refusal at the checkpoint.

Packing and protecting the batteries
Spare batteries must be protected against short circuit. Tape over exposed contacts with electrical or gaffer tape, or keep each pack in its own plastic bag, original case, or battery sleeve so terminals cannot touch keys, coins or each other.
Fly with packs at storage charge — around 30 to 50 percent — rather than fully charged. Some airlines explicitly ask for partially charged packs, it is safer, and it is better for the cells anyway. See battery care for storage voltage detail.
Put the drone in a hard case or a padded compartment, remove the propellers or fit prop guards so arms cannot flex in transit, and lock the gimbal with its clamp. Expect your bag to be opened: a drone with folded arms looks unfamiliar on an X-ray, so pack it where it can be lifted out without unloading everything else.
Getting through the TSA checkpoint
Drones are allowed through US security in carry-on. Take the aircraft out of your bag if asked, and be ready to show the batteries. Screening officers have wide discretion at the checkpoint, so cooperative and quick beats arguing about the letter of the rule.
Do not fly the drone at the airport, on the apron, or from a hotel balcony under a departure path. Airport surface area is controlled airspace, and the penalties for unauthorized flight there are severe — see where can I fly and LAANC.
Carry proof of registration. US pilots must be able to present the registration certificate when asked, and having it on your phone plus a printed copy in the case costs nothing. Your registration number must also be marked on the aircraft's exterior — see marking your drone.
International travel
Battery rules are near-universal; drone laws are not. Rules vary from "register online and fly" to outright prohibition, and a few countries confiscate aircraft at customs with no route to getting them back.
Before you travel, check the destination's civil aviation authority for:
- Whether recreational drone flight is legal at all
- Whether visitors may register, or whether registration requires residency
- Import or customs declaration requirements on arrival
- National park, heritage site and city-center restrictions
- Remote ID or equivalent broadcast requirements
- Insurance requirements — several countries mandate third-party liability cover
Your FAA registration is only valid in the United States and its territories; it carries no weight abroad. Equally, foreign visitors flying in the US must comply with US rules, including registration for aircraft over 250 grams.
