A drone purchase is followed almost immediately by a shopping list, and most of that list is unnecessary. The gear that genuinely changes how you fly is short and boring: power, storage, a clean place to take off, and something to carry it all in. Everything else ranges from a modest convenience to money set on fire.
This guide sorts the common accessories into three buckets — essential, nice to have, and skip it — with the reasoning behind each call, so you can build a kit that fits how you actually fly rather than how the bundle page is laid out.
Essential: buy these first
Spare batteries — at least three total
Nothing else on this page comes close. A single pack gives you 15 to 25 minutes of realistic flight time once you account for wind, cold and landing with a safe reserve at 25 percent. That is one location, one attempt, no room to fix a mistake. Three batteries turn the same trip into roughly an hour of air time and let you re-shoot a scene instead of accepting the first take.
Buy manufacturer or reputable licensed packs. Third-party cells are the most common cause of in-flight power failures and are the one place where saving forty dollars can cost you the whole aircraft. A multi-battery charging hub is a genuine convenience if you fly regularly: it charges packs sequentially and unattended overnight risk is lower with the aircraft's own charger ecosystem than with generic bricks.
Rotate packs evenly rather than always grabbing the same one, and store them at 40 to 60 percent between sessions. Most modern packs self-discharge to that level after a few days on their own — let them.
Memory cards — V30 / U3 or higher
High-bitrate 4K video writes far faster than a cheap card can absorb, and the result is dropped frames or a recording that stops mid-clip. Look for the V30 video speed rating or UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) at minimum; if your drone shoots 5.1K or 120 fps, V60 or V90 is the safer choice.
On capacity, 128 GB is the practical sweet spot — roughly two hours of 4K footage, which is more than a day's batteries can produce. Two 128 GB cards beat one 256 GB card: a corrupted card takes half your day instead of all of it. Format the card in the drone before each session rather than deleting files on a computer, and buy from a retailer where counterfeits are unlikely, because fake cards are rampant.
A case or backpack
The aircraft, controller, three batteries, cables, propellers and filters need to travel as one unit, protected from crushing and moisture. A hard shell case is best for car and checked transport of the aircraft; a purpose-built backpack is better if you hike to locations. Either way, use a case with cut foam or fitted compartments so the gimbal is never carrying the weight of something else.
Spare propellers
Propellers are consumables. A nick you can feel with a fingernail changes the balance enough to stress a motor and put vibration into your video. Keep at least one full spare set — always replace as a set, never a single blade — and a second set if you fly in unfamiliar places.
A registration label
If your drone is over 250 grams, your FAA registration number has to be legible on the exterior. An engraved metal plate, a laminated sticker or a P-touch label all satisfy this; a slip of paper under a battery door does not. Add your phone number while you are at it — it is what gets a recovered drone returned to you.

Nice to have: buy when you hit the limit
ND filters
Neutral density filters darken the lens without shifting color, which lets you keep the shutter speed at roughly double your frame rate — 1/60 second at 30 fps — in bright daylight. That is what produces natural motion blur instead of the stuttery, over-sharp look of an unfiltered drone clip.
Three strengths cover almost everything: ND8 for overcast or golden hour, ND16 for normal daylight, and ND32 for bright sun, snow or water. Add an ND64 only if you shoot midday over reflective surfaces. Polarizer combinations (ND/PL) cut glare on water and glass but need to be rotated correctly, so they are a second purchase, not a first. If you only shoot photos, skip filters entirely.
Landing pad
A weighted, foldable pad keeps sand, dust, grass clippings and gravel out of the motors and gimbal, and gives the downward vision sensors a consistent surface to lock onto. It also marks your takeoff point clearly, which matters when you return from a distance. Cheap, packs flat, genuinely useful — but only if you fly off unpaved ground.
Propeller guards
Guards make sense indoors, in tight spaces, and when practicing around people or pets. Outdoors they cost you flight time and make the aircraft noticeably worse in wind. And the weight matters: on a 249-gram drone, guards can push takeoff weight past 250 grams, which changes both your registration obligation and your eligibility to fly over people.
Check the actual number with the weight checker before assuming you are still under the threshold.
Powerbank for the controller
Controllers and phones die before drones do, especially in the cold with the screen at full brightness. A modest 10,000 mAh USB-C bank with the right cable removes an entire category of cut-short sessions. It doubles as a hand warmer for cold batteries.
Propeller holders and microfiber cloths
A propeller holder — the elastic band or clip that keeps blades folded against the arms — stops propellers from being bent in the bag and protects the motors during transport. Most drones ship with one; a spare costs almost nothing. Microfiber cloths keep the lens and filters clean, and a smudged lens ruins more footage than any setting you can change.

Skip it: money that buys nothing
Signal boosters and antenna reflectors. The foil parabolic clips sold as range extenders narrow your antenna pattern rather than amplifying it. In practice they make the link more directional and easier to lose, and encouraging longer flights works against the visual line-of-sight rule you are legally required to keep anyway.
Aftermarket "low-noise, longer-range" propellers. Manufacturer propellers are matched to the motors and flight controller tuning. Third-party blades change thrust curves and vibration characteristics, and any gains are within measurement noise.
Generic batteries. The savings are real and so is the risk. A pack that sags under load at 300 feet ends the flight, not the battery.
Skins, decals and gimbal bling. Purely cosmetic, and some skins interfere with vents and sensors.
Ten-piece filter kits. You will use three strengths. The rest are unlabeled glass you will not trust in the field.
Weight is the hidden cost of every accessory
A sensible buying order
If the budget is staged, buy in this order: batteries two and three, a fast memory card, a case, a spare propeller set, a registration label, then a landing pad. Only after all of that does it make sense to look at filters, and only if you are shooting video you care about.
Then spend the remaining money on flying rather than gear. The pilots who produce clean footage are the ones with sixty flights behind them, not the ones with the deepest accessory drawer. When you are ready to fly, work through the pre-flight checklist and check the weather and wind conditions before you leave the house.
